Requirements

Growing Mushrooms requires patience and the ability to follow directions.  If you have patience, want to learn some patience, (or want to teach some patience), and have a curiosity for science or the natural world, then this is definitely for you.
The full process of growing mushrooms can take a while – it is not a process of immediate gratification. Some kits will produce mushrooms within 4 weeks – others may take 8 weeks or more.  The natural world operates on its own time-scale. We find that having these kits in your space is a great counterpoint to the fast-paced world many of us live in, and a good way to keep long-term perspectives when much of our lives are so immediately focused.

You will also need a plate, scissors, scotch tape, a spray bottle filled with clean water, and a place in your home out of direct sunlight that stays near room temperature.

Gifting

These kits do not ship right away.  We make them on a monthly cycle, and orders placed this month will ship the first 2 weeks of the following month.  Most people enjoy getting presents early*, but if you want to give a kit to someone on a particular day, you can store kits in the refrigerator for up to a month.
*not fact-checked, but probably true.

Disclaimer

For legal reasons, we cannot suggest that you consume any mushrooms.  Always consult an expert and get a 100% positive identification before eating or using any mushrooms.  Some people are sensitive to mushrooms, and especially mushroom spores.  Do not grow mushrooms in any space shared with someone with a known sensitivity or allergy to mushrooms, fungal spores, or mycelium.

What’s inside the kit?

Each kit contains two main things – a small amount of “Mycelium” (a network of fungal cells that form an organism) and a large amount of “Substrate” (food for the fungus to eat).  The mycelium will gradually “Colonize” the substrate, breaking down the lignins and cellulose in the substrate and digesting their molecular pieces.

What’s that white patch for?

The fungus growing inside your kit isn’t the only thing that would love to eat the substrate!  If the bag were left open, “Contaminants” (other molds and bacteria) could come in and set up a home in the substrate before your preferred mycelium could get to it. (Like too many weeds in the garden.). So, the substrate is kept in a bag to keep it protected.  ..but the mycelium needs to breath (Just like us!). In fact, fungi are more closely related to us than they are to plants.  In order to grow, they need to breath in Oxygen and exhale Carbon Dioxide.  That little white patch has microscopic holes in it that allow the Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide to pass through, while keeping contaminants out.  It is still possible for very small organisms to squeeze through those microscopic holes if something gives them a push, so avoid touching the white patch as much as you can.
